Dell XPS 13 Review (2026): Better Than MacBook Neo?

This Dell XPS 13 review compares the 2026 DX13260 with MacBook Neo and explains whether the $699 base model needs the $200 upgrade to 16GB RAM.

This Dell XPS 13 review covers the 2026 DX13260, not the older XPS 13 models that remain visible in search results. Dell’s $699.99 base configuration pairs a Series 3 Intel Core 5-320 with 8GB of onboard memory, a 512GB SSD, and a 13.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen. On paper, it is a direct Windows alternative to Apple’s $699 512GB MacBook Neo rather than the $599 256GB model.

The Dell offers more hardware in several visible places: it is half a pound lighter, doubles the base storage, adds touch input and a 120Hz maximum refresh rate, and includes a backlit keyboard. Its weak point is less visible. The base 8GB memory is soldered, single-channel, and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Dell charges $899.99 for an otherwise similar 16GB configuration.

Dell XPS 13 Review Verdict

Buy the $699 XPS 13 if you need Windows, value a light touchscreen laptop, and know that your workload can remain within 8GB. It is particularly compelling for web-based coursework, writing, presentations, streaming, and disciplined office use because its 512GB SSD and display are generous for the price.

Pay for 16GB if the laptop will stay in service for several years or regularly handles large browser sessions, development tools, data work, creative applications, or multiple communication apps at once. The $200 premium is painful, but an unnecessary replacement would cost more.

Skip this model if you need more than 16GB, discrete graphics, upgradeable RAM, or several built-in connectors. Choose the $599 MacBook Neo when the lowest purchase price and macOS matter more than touch, weight, or storage; choose its $699 512GB tier when Apple integration and Touch ID outweigh Dell’s display and portability advantages.

What the $699 Base Model Gets Right

Dell’s base configuration includes a 6-core Intel Core 5-320, integrated Intel graphics, Windows 11 Home, 8GB LPDDR5X memory, and a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD. The 13.4-inch touchscreen has a 2560 x 1600 resolution, a 30-120Hz variable refresh range, and a rated 500-nit brightness.

The chassis starts at 2.2 pounds and measures 0.50 x 7.90 x 11.69 inches. Dell uses CNC aluminum, a glass precision touchpad, a backlit keyboard, a 1080p IR camera for Windows Hello, and a four-speaker arrangement. Wireless support includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0.

That package does not need invented superlatives. A 120Hz touch panel, 512GB storage, facial login, and a 2.2-pound body are concrete advantages for a student moving between classes or a worker carrying a computer all day. Whether the keyboard, speakers, panel, and touchpad feel premium requires hands-on comparison.

The 8GB Decision Matters More Than the Processor Name

Eight gigabytes can support a light workload, but memory pressure depends on behavior rather than job title. A few browser tabs, a document editor, email, and a video call are different from dozens of tabs, an IDE, local databases, large images, or several collaboration tools running together.

The memory is integrated into the system board. Dell’s documentation lists 8GB and 16GB for Core configurations, with no later upgrade path. Storage can be replaced through the internal M.2 slot, but an SSD upgrade does not increase working memory.

Dell listed the 16GB Core 5-320 configuration at $899.99 during this check. The additional 8GB therefore costs $200: a 28.6% increase over the base price, or $25 per added gigabyte. That is not attractive component pricing; it is the cost of avoiding a permanent constraint.

Choose 8GB only after opening your current computer’s normal workload and checking memory use over several days. Choose 16GB when the result is consistently near the limit, when your software requirements already specify more than 8GB, or when the machine must remain useful through growing workloads. Neither configuration is appropriate for a buyer who already knows 32GB is necessary.

A Better Display and a Lighter Bag Than MacBook Neo

Dell’s 13.4-inch panel is slightly larger than MacBook Neo’s 13.0-inch display. Both manufacturers list 500-nit brightness, but the Dell adds touch, a 30-120Hz variable refresh range, 2560 x 1600 resolution, and a claimed 100% DCI-P3 gamut. Apple lists a 2408 x 1506, non-touch panel using sRGB color.

Those specifications make XPS 13 more flexible for direct navigation and smoother scrolling. They do not prove better color accuracy, uniformity, response time, reflections, or motion behavior. Dell’s “professional-grade” wording on its comparison page remains a manufacturer claim until independently measured.

Weight is simpler. Dell starts at 2.2 pounds; Apple lists MacBook Neo at 2.7 pounds. The XPS is 0.5 pound lighter, an 18.5% reduction relative to the Neo. That difference is large enough to notice in a bag, although a protective case, charger, and adapters affect the complete travel load.

The Base Processor Does Not Include Thunderbolt

The Core 5-320 option is a value-oriented Intel processor with integrated graphics. Its name should not be used to declare a performance winner against Apple’s A18 Pro. Cross-platform speed varies by application, media engine, power mode, thermal behavior, and whether software is optimized for Windows or macOS.

One detail is easy to miss: Dell’s manual distinguishes ordinary Intel Core configurations from Core Ultra configurations. The Core 5-320 model has two 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery. Core Ultra versions receive 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4.

The $699 and $899 configurations discussed here are Core 5-320 systems. Do not assume every 2026 XPS 13 has Thunderbolt because another processor option does. Buyers using fast external storage, advanced docks, or high-bandwidth displays should verify the exact order code before checkout.

Two USB-C Ports Make a Hub Likely

There is one USB-C port on each side, and either can accept the power adapter. Charging occupies half the physical port count unless a dock provides pass-through power. Dell lists no card reader, while common USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, and audio connections require an adapter, dock, or wireless alternative.

MacBook Neo is also limited to two USB-C ports, but its ports are unequal: one supports 10Gbps USB 3 and DisplayPort, while the other is limited to 480Mbps USB 2. Apple does include a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Neo supports one external display up to 4K at 60Hz; Dell documents multi-display connection through a compatible dock, with support depending on processor and display configuration.

Count your desk devices before comparing only laptop prices. A reliable powered hub, display adapter, and wired-audio solution can change both total cost and portability.

Dell XPS 13 or MacBook Neo?

Apple currently sells two new MacBook Neo configurations: 8GB/256GB with a standard Magic Keyboard from $599, and 8GB/512GB with Touch ID from $699. Dell’s 8GB/512GB XPS 13 is therefore $100 more than Apple’s least expensive Neo but competes at the same regular price and storage tier as the $699 Neo.

Choose XPS 13 for Windows, the lighter chassis, touchscreen, 120Hz, backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 7, or the option to buy 16GB. Choose MacBook Neo for macOS, Apple-specific continuity features, the headphone jack, or the lower $599 entry price. At $699, both provide 8GB and 512GB, while Apple adds Touch ID and Dell supplies its display and weight advantages. Processor specifications alone cannot settle the choice.

  2. Will the same workload become more demanding during the ownership period? If likely, the $899 16GB model is safer despite the steep premium.
  3. Do you need more than 16GB or discrete graphics now? If yes, leave this configuration family rather than paying to work around its ceiling.
  4. Would Mac-specific software or Apple-device integration be used every day? If yes, hardware-table wins may be less important than platform fit.

The 2026 Dell XPS 13 is a strong MacBook Neo alternative, but the base model’s value depends on an honest memory decision. Its screen, weight, storage, and Windows flexibility are meaningful advantages at $699. Buying 8GB without checking your workload turns those advantages into a short-term bargain. Choose the memory first; let the operating system and display decide the rest.
