It still offers a combination the MacBook Air does not match: a 120Hz ProMotion XDR display, active cooling, HDMI, an SDXC slot, three Thunderbolt ports, and a 1TB SSD. The problem is that buyers can now find cheaper paths within the same M5 generation or an older Pro-chip configuration with more memory.

Neither alternative is permanent, but both expose how weak the full-price 16GB configuration has become.

Choose an M5 MacBook Air if your work is mostly browser tabs, documents, meetings, programming builds of modest duration, and occasional photo or video edits. Keep a satisfactory M2, M3, or M4 MacBook Pro unless a current limitation is costing time or blocking work.

What the Price Hike Actually Changed

Apple’s March 2026 announcement listed the base 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro with 1TB storage at $1,699. The exact 16GB/1TB configuration was $1,999 on Apple’s US store during this check: $300 higher, a 17.7% increase.

The checked $1,849 Best Buy price gives back half of that increase. It is $150 below $1,999, but still $150—or 8.8%—above the March price. That leads to a practical threshold:

That hardware gives the system a way to move heat during extended exports, code compilation, 3D work, or local AI processing. When the M5 MacBook Air Is the Better Buy

The starting 13-inch M5 MacBook Air is not configuration-matched to this Pro. It has a 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB memory, and 512GB SSD; the reviewed Pro has a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB memory, and 1TB SSD. The Air’s fanless design is thinner, lighter, and silent, but its 500-nit Liquid Retina display lacks the Pro model’s XDR and 120Hz capabilities. It also provides two Thunderbolt 4 ports rather than three, with no built-in HDMI or SDXC slot.

That makes the Air the default choice when portability and cost matter more than long sustained workloads, HDR display capability, or built-in ports. Do not pay the Pro premium because the word “Pro” sounds more durable or future-proof. Pay it only for features you can connect to repeated tasks.

When Refurbished M4 Pro Offers More Memory for Less

Apple’s checked $1,779 refurbished configuration changes the value question. On paper, it includes 24GB unified memory and an M4 Pro chip with a 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU, compared with 16GB and a 10-core CPU/10-core GPU M5 in the new base model. It also uses Thunderbolt 5, while the base M5 uses Thunderbolt 4. Those specifications provide more memory headroom and additional CPU/GPU cores; they do not prove that the M4 Pro is faster in every application, and Gearxis did not benchmark the two systems.

The trade-off is storage and inventory. The refurbished model has a 512GB SSD, half the new base M5’s capacity, and a specific refurbished configuration may disappear. External storage can solve capacity for some workflows, but it adds another device and does not replace internal storage convenience.

Choose refurbished M4 Pro when 24GB memory, its listed core configuration, or Thunderbolt 5 fits your requirements better than 1TB internal storage and the newest base chip. Who Should Skip the Upgrade

Skip this purchase if an M2 through M4 MacBook Pro already completes your work on time, supports your displays, and has enough memory. A $300 price increase does not make an existing capable machine less useful.
