The speed row looks like a tie because it is a tie on paper. The useful differences are the physical protection, weight, temperature specification, software preference, and—most importantly—the host port you already own.
Your Port Is the First Bottleneck
USB-IF defines USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 as two 10Gbps lanes for a 20Gbps signaling rate. It also states that USB products fall back to the lowest common speed capability. That means the drive, host port, and cable must all support the required link for the manufacturer’s 2,000MB/s-class claim to be relevant.
Use this compatibility rule before comparing brands:
- Host explicitly lists USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 or 20Gbps: both drives are in the intended speed class.
- Host lists only USB 3.2 Gen 2 or 10Gbps: expect the connection, not the SSD’s headline number, to set the ceiling.
- Host lists USB4 or Thunderbolt but not Gen 2×2: verify the specific computer’s documentation instead of assuming every USB-C mode is included.
- You regularly move between several computers: choose for the slowest machine that matters, or accept that peak speed will vary.
This is why paying more for one of these drives may not shorten a transfer on your current laptop. A port check has more decision value than comparing two identical 2,000MB/s labels.
SanDisk Has the Clearer Travel Advantage
SanDisk lists the Extreme PRO SDSSDE81 at 77.5 grams, compared with Samsung’s 122 grams. The difference is 44.5 grams, making the SanDisk approximately 36.5% lighter relative to the T9’s listed weight. That will not transform a backpack, but it is a measurable advantage for a drive carried with a camera, handheld console, tablet, or travel cable kit.

It does give buyers working in hot environments a documented reason to examine Samsung first.
Samsung’s 122g enclosure is heavier, and its lack of a published IP rating weakens the case for exposed outdoor work. Choose it for software familiarity, device workflow, or operating-range requirements—not because its speed number is higher. At the 4TB capacity both brands claim up to 2,000MB/s read and write.
Security Is Similar, but Workflow Details Matter
Both manufacturers document 256-bit AES hardware encryption or password protection. That does not make the setup identical. Samsung ties management to Samsung Magician, while SanDisk documents password-protection software support. Check whether the required software supports every computer or mobile device you intend to use before placing irreplaceable data behind a password.
For cross-platform use, also decide the filesystem before loading the drive. A format optimized for one operating system may not be writable everywhere. Encryption software, console storage rules, phone power delivery, and camera recording support are separate compatibility questions from the USB connector.
Who Should Skip Each Drive
Skip the Samsung T9 if an IP65 rating and the lowest carry weight are priorities. Also skip it if your host is limited to 10Gbps and a less expensive 10Gbps SSD satisfies the same job; unused interface speed is not additional value.
Skip the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDSSDE81 if you specifically need Samsung Magician, Samsung’s wider published operating-temperature range, or the shorter enclosure. Do not buy SDSSDE81 expecting the newer USB4 model’s 3,800MB/s claim—the names are similar, but the model families and interfaces differ.
Skip both when your workflow genuinely needs more than the 20Gbps class and your computer supports USB4. In that case, compare USB4 drives separately. Also skip both as the only home for important work; portable storage should be one copy, not the backup plan by itself.
