Current MacBook Air and base M5 MacBook Pro specifications list Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 at up to 40Gbps, which aligns more directly with SanDisk’s documented interface and Thunderbolt 4 support. SanDisk’s claimed 3,800MB/s read ceiling is 90% higher than Samsung’s 2,000MB/s ceiling. Its 3,700MB/s write claim is about 90% higher than the T9 2TB’s 1,950MB/s claim. Gearxis calculated those differences from the manufacturers’ published maximums; they are not evidence that every transfer will finish 90% faster.
Large, sequential media files are the clearest use case for the higher ceiling. A folder containing thousands of small files, a backup job limited by software, or a machine with a slower port can narrow the practical gap. Long transfers after a drive’s temporary cache is exhausted are a separate question that maximum sequential specifications do not answer.
If you edit large video projects directly from external storage or repeatedly move hundreds of gigabytes, SanDisk’s additional interface headroom has a credible purpose. If you make occasional backups, move documents, or use a 10Gbps host, capacity, reliability practices, and current price should carry more weight.
SanDisk Buys Speed and Weather Protection With More Bulk
SanDisk lists the USB4 model at 172g, 50g heavier than the 122g T9. That makes it about 41% heavier relative to the T9. It is also substantially longer: 139.95mm versus 88mm. The SanDisk is slightly thinner, but it occupies more length and width in a pouch.
The trade-off is a forged aluminum chassis, silicone shell, an IP65 claim, and up-to-two-meter drop protection. IP65 does not mean the drive is safe for submersion, and SanDisk says it must be clean and dry before use. Samsung publishes an up-to-three-meter drop claim for the T9 but does not list an IP water- or dust-resistance rating in the current T9 data sheet.
Choose SanDisk for exposed field work only after considering both sides: it publishes the clearer water-and-dust protection, but it is the heavier object to carry. Choose T9 when a smaller footprint and lower weight matter more than an IP rating.
Capacity and Price Can Reverse the Recommendation
Samsung offers 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB T9 versions. SanDisk lists 2TB and 4TB USB4 models. A buyer needing only 1TB therefore has no equivalent capacity in this SanDisk family.
Do not compare a discounted 1TB T9 with a 2TB SanDisk and call one brand cheaper. Select the capacity first, then compare the 2TB-to-2TB or 4TB-to-4TB final price from sellers with acceptable return and warranty coverage. Prices and availability change too quickly to preserve a fixed dollar winner in this article.
Both manufacturers provide five-year limited warranties. A long warranty does not replace backups: neither drive should hold the only copy of important work. Keep at least one additional copy, with one copy separated from the drive you carry.

Its IP65 rating is also the clearer field-work credential. Skip it when your computers are limited to 10Gbps, when 1TB is enough, or when its extra 50g and larger footprint work against your travel kit.
